The Bellona Times

The Bellona Times, the fictional newspaper published within the collapsed city of
Bellona, operates as a crucial metafictional device that embodies many of Dhalgren's
central concerns about reality, temporality, and textual authority.

1. UNDERGROUND/ALTERNATIVE PRESS (1960s-70s)
The Bellona Times resonates with the underground newspapers that proliferated during
the counterculture era: Berkeley Barb, East Village Other, Los Angeles Free Press, etc.
These papers operated outside mainstream media structures, often with irregular
publication and unconventional formatting. Dhalgren was published in 1975, the tail end
of this movement.
